    Moravskoslezská vagonka a.s. in Studénka responds to the current and future needs of the passenger rail transport. The presented electric multiple unit with a progressive design is intended for passenger mass transit on suburban electrified lines. We have prepared both a single-deck and double-deck model with the traction equipment operating on the 3 kV DC line voltage.
    While designing the suburban electric multiple units, Moravskoslezská vagonka a.s. took advantage of its experience from the period of 1961-1991 over which the factory manufactured 129 EMUs in four different models with steel bodies for Ceskoslovenské statní dráhy (Czechoslovak State Railways).
    The design of the suburban EMUs is a result of Moravskoslezská vagonka a.s.' in-company development and research in co-operation with subcontractors of individual parts, sets and equipment.
    The traction electric equipment including the convertors, motor bogies and the controlling microprocessor electronics can be modified with respect to customers' requirements. The presented suburban EMU model of the 471 type intended for Ceské Dráhy s.o. (Czech railways) has been equipped with parts supplied by Skoda Dopravní technika, s.r.o., Plzen which has a long tradition in manufacture of electric locomotives. The components used have been tested in these locomotives.

    The railcar conception

    The basic set of the 471 type EMU for Ceské Dráhy s.o. consists of two cars or three cars - one electric motor car and one driving trailer, or the same with one another intermediate trailer. These EMUs are designed for operation in sets with the maximum of three other basic units.
    The basic units can be combined with regards to the traffic needs to form economical train sets of the desired capacity. Their advantage lies in the easy divisibility of the large capacity train sets into smaller sets intended for various transport routes.
    Generally a wide range of configurations can be achieved while operating the EMUs.

    The progressiveness

    The progresiveness of the design lies in use of aluminium as the car body's main building material. The use of large aluminium sections, supplied by the renowned Swiss company Alusuisse Road & Rail AG, Zuerich attributes to further technical and utility parameter improvements.
    Yet another technical improvement is the employment of asynchronous motors in traction as well as in auxiliary drives with minimum maintenance needs and IGBT transistors in voltage-frequency invertors.
    Operational connection of the basic units into sets is realized via an automatic coupler mounted on the front of the electric motor coach and driving trailer.
    The microprocessor control of the train main and auxiliary drives enables quick and effortless regulation.
    The driver's cab is equipped with a PA system microphone, a radiostation and a telephone which enables communication with the personnel or with the driver's cab in another electric car or driving trailer.
    The electric car is equipped with an electrodynamic brake with regeneration into its own network and into the trolley line. The DAKO (produced by DAKO Tremosnice) pneumatic disk brake pressure is load-adjustable.
    All the cars are equipped with an air-conditioning system.

    Operation and maintenance cost reduction

    Lowered operation and maintenance costs will be especially appreciated by the railcar operators and users.
    The low aluminium specific weight and the steel and aluminium double deck body design are the two factors causing weight reduction per seat.
    Transistor regulation of the traction power, as well as the design of asynchronous motors, contribute to substantial electric energy savings.
    Identical design and shape of all cars enable mechanical cleaning in brush-type washes.
    The undercarriage design enables pressured water cleaning during work shop repairs.

    Comforts and convenciences for passenger

    The railcar conceptions consistently observe the passengers' requirements regarding travelling comforts and convenciences under all conditions.
    The floor height is 550 mm above the top of rail. Wide entries divide the ground plan of all the cars into three parts with large compartments in the central section of each deck. Discerning passengers can use the first class compartments.
    Aesthetic seats with permeable textile covers and the entire interior design fully comply with ergonomic regulations.
    The cars are equipped with passenger audio-visual information systems.
    The microprocessor controlled air-conditioning system provides adequate hot-air heating in the winter and ample cool-air ventilation in the summer, thus changing tiresome travelling into an enjoyable experience.
    The windows have safety double glazed panels with a dethermal exterior glass. The electric motor coach and the driving trailer feature further modifications enabling comfortable and easy travelling for the handicapped persons to easily access the passenger compartment as well the lavatory.

    Environmental aspects

    The technical design principle of the electric traction and absence of petroleum products enable environmentaly-friendly operation. Materials used in manufacture are recyclable and to not contain carcinogenic substances.

    Increased safety

    Operational safety is increased by the employment of a combined braking system. Fire security system includes both fire prevention as well as early detection and extinguishing. The materials used in the cars' interior have reduced flammability. In case of fire, the emergency is indicated by fire alarms stationed in all cars of the unit and connected to the central fire signalling system.

    Increased safety

    Moravskoslezská vagonka a.s. offers the operators assistance and a wide range of services in placing the railcars in service and service operation. More specifically, Moravskoslezská vagonka a.s. can provide the EMU operators with personnel training at the manufacturing plant, briefings conducted with the respective operators, production of an instructive videotape, as well as the completion of higher-level repairs. Individual requirements regarding special services to negotiations which aim at full satisfaction of the customer.

    Car body

    The integral body of the double deck EMU is a light welded structure made of large extruded aluminium sections. The body has thermal and sound insulation. The low-pressure hot-air heating is provided by 3 kV DC electric warming sets. In summer these sets provide the passenger compartments as well as the driver's cab with the ample cooled air ventilation.


    The bogie design guarantees comfortable travelling. The pneumatic suspension enables automatic load-adjustable car height regulation. The motor bogies are equipped with asynchronous electric motors with the nominal output of 500 kW.


    The voltage-frequency invertors for the four asynchronous traction motor feeding with its own ventilation are centralized into two integral blocks. Both motors of each bogie are supplied from its voltage-frequency invertor which can be disconnected via the pneumatic disconnecting switches, which allow for operation on only one motor bogie. The voltage-frequency invertors are connected through their inlet filter directly to the trolley line voltage without an intercircuit.

    Electric equipment

    The electric car supplies the cars with electric power from the 540 V DC and 3 kV DC network. The 540 V DC/3x380 V, 50 Hz voltage-frequency invertor provides power for the car storage battery charger and other equipment. The 24 V DC storage battery is used for control system and car network feeding.

    Driving and controlling

    The main and auxilliary drives are controlled by means of a microprocessor system which at the same time provides diagnostics and communication with the engine driver via the control desk display. When in the multiple unit control mode, the control system enables a single driver to operate up to four units of the set. The control is realized via so called train bus-bar.


    The electric motor coach electrodynamic brake is an independent rheostatic brake with the 1,700 kW output on the whell rim or a regenerative brake recuperating electric power either into the auxiliary drives and heating system or into the traction network. In such case the brake performance is limited by the traction equipment parameters at the "run" mode or by the traction network voltage which cannot exceed the maximum of 3,5 kV DC.
    All the bogies are equipped with a disk brake; the electric motor coach has the disk stationed on the weels. The intermediate trailer and the driving trailer have three brake disks stationed on the bogies. One bogie per car is equipped with an emergency magnetic track brake. One bogie per car is equipped with a hande brake.
